What is life? How do biologists define it? Students will discuss the theory around it, macromolecules and cell structure. Is there other life in the universe? Students will look at the making the distinction between intelligent life and life as molecular complexes able to replicate and make use of energy either of stellar origin or other available molecules. Students will also cover the structural features of DNA and the history of DNA sequencing. This course will cover cellular respiration, identifying the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration, as well as Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution, infectious diseases, viruses and ‘superbugs’. Participants will be shown around a typical laboratory at one of the university colleges, where they will be able to discuss careers in biomedical research and biology with research workers there.
