In this in-depth chemistry course, students will start by looking at atomic structure and periodicity, analysing the modern day periodic table. They will be introduced to quantum mechanics, comparing the quantum mechanical and classical models of the atom, organic chemistry and bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics by looking at practical examples, such as the Haber process, acids and bases, compounds, hybridisation and VSEPR theory to determine the angular inclinations of molecular structures. Students will also study experimental and computational techniques such as different spectroscopies and various diffraction techniques. They will look at how scientists are using microorganisms to convert biomass into fuel in sustainable chemistry. Finally, students will look at scientific advances in nanotechnology and its uses in manufacturing.
