In this course, students will discover what economics is really about? Microeconomics looking at markets and market failures, macroeconomics looking at how fiscal policies affect our economy, the economics of trade, trade-protection and the benefits of free trade, how politics play an important role in shaping society, and how corruption can hinder the development of a country. Students will look at why some countries are rich and grow rapidly, like China and India, and why others stagnate. Are there lessons to be learned from the past, why was the UK one of the first to experience the Industrial Revolution? What triggered the Great Recession? Students will be introduced to how the financial markets operate, learn about Game Theory, Auction Theory and econometrics, discussing the tools using data to test hypotheses.
