A Focus on Creative Writing this summer

This week we are going to highlight our creative writing and literature Academic Insights courses offered at both our Oxford and Cambridge colleges for 13-15 and 16-18 year old students this summer.
There are also Creative Writing & Film courses being offered as part of our Career Insights programmes at our University College London campus.

The course is designed around the idea that creative writing cannot really be taught, but given the right tools, students can develop a writing practice and style.
Students on the course will learn about

  • fiction and non-fiction, looking at reality versus fantasy
  • how to build stories around different characters like Elizabeth Bennett, Harry Potter, Lyra Belacqua, etc.
  • structure, how to create a plot, breaking it down into chapters or scenes, exposition, falling action, trajectory, dénouement, creating maps.
  • place descriptions, pathetic fallacy, perspective, metaphysics of place
  • poetry, rhythm and rhyme, and how it connects to us at a different level.

By the end of the course students will have created several pieces of writing in a variety of forms, as well as a longer form piece as part of their personal project. These will cover fiction, non-fiction, poetry and other forms of creative writing, giving them a wide range of styles and forms to engage with and create in.

As a participant on this course they will receive a 12-month digital events pass to the Royal Society of Literature giving them access to guest talks, webinars and workshops while they continue to write.
